Now, I realise I should properly introduced myself...

Who am I?

My name is Steve Duke and I’m obsessed with finding solutions to our mental health crisis.

People often ask me why I’m so obsessed with this. Couldn’t I just have stayed working at McKinsey or at my last tech startup? Why did I leave these jobs to dedicate my career to finding solutions to this problem?

I always give them the same three answers.

  1. It’s personal. When I was eleven years old, I was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It was hell. Thankfully, my parents were able to get me the help I needed and I responded really positively. I’ve never had issues with OCD since, but at a very early age I learned what it was like to try and live life with a mental disorder. That feeling, and the empathy that comes with it, never left me.

  2. The problem is too important to ignore. Having more money, a better job, a nicer house, tastier food… none of that matters if you are struggling with a mental disorder. And unfortunately, there are hundreds of millions of people in the world living with a mental disorder right now. The problem is pervasive, debilitating and it’s trending in the wrong direction. A society with poor mental health is a very poor society indeed.

  3. It’s absolutely fascinating. I’m an extremely curious person and the world of mental health endlessly provokes this curiosity. It’s a complex, multi-faceted problem, and frankly, there is so much we still don’t understand. I find that incredibly exciting. Every day, we are making new discoveries in neuroscience, social science, psychology and technology that changes how we understand and can treat mental disorders. I devour the latest research papers and books and have to hold myself back from it being the only thing I talk about with my friends.

The Hemingway Report is something I wished existed in the world. It’s a source of insight on mental health solutions, specifically looking at the intersection of business and mental health and how we can use private business as a vehicle for accelerating solutions. But more than anything, it’s a community of talented, passionate people, all interested in the same goal.

If you share my passion, please connect with me on LinkedIn. I’d love to hear from you.Steve
